    Questions & Answers
Question : Why are Dental Hygiene programs so competitive if Dental Hygienists are in such high demand?
I am thinking about becoming a dental hygienist and i hear that they are in really high demand, but if they are in such high demand why is it so hard to get into a dental hygiene program in college???

    Answer:
Because dental hygienists are in high demand there are many applicants for a limited number of spots in the program. When there are more applicants than spots the school will choose the highest ranking candidates. This makes a dental hygiene program more rigorous to gain admission to.

Question : Is it wrong for me to withhold my vote from a man because he has poor dental hygiene?
I'm not tolerant of poor dental hygiene, it's not that hard to pick up a toothbrush. I just find that plain nasty.

    Answer:
i would say thats your choice, but its a silly thing to base a vote on!

Question : How is dental hygiene and heart conditions related?
My mother has mitral valve stenosis and often is concerned that any work / medicine they have done with her teeh (root canal for example) may be harmful to her mitral valve heart condition. why is this? I also notice that many people on here who answer the heart disease questions have sources that are dental related (they are dental hygienists, dentists)

    Answer:
It is very easy to get a cut in your mouth while at the dentist( sharp metal tools) that could lead to a possible infection, from what I understand anyone with heart problems has to be very careful about this. I had to take antibiotics before every dental appointment for thirty five years( the just discontinued that for me). They can't be too careful with heart valves

Question : What are some good Houston based institutions to get dental hygiene licensed without attending a university?
I want to recieve my dental hygiene license from an institution that allows me to do this a little faster than attending a college, are there any like this in houston besides montgomery county community college, they want me to take all of these biology pre-reqs, that will just waste my time.

    Answer:
Universities do not offer dental hygiene programs. Check out community colleges, but be wary of trade schools. Before signing on with a trade school, ask to see records of how many of their graduates pass the state boards AND how many find jobs withing 90 days. Most dental schools operate a program for dental hygienists. Talk to you hygienist and ask where they went to school.

Question : Is it possible to work while in dental hygiene school?
I just finished dental assisting school and will start working soon. I want to go to dental hygiene school at some point when I can afford it. I heard from multiple people that it's extremely difficult to work while in DH school, and now I'm worried because that is my only option. Any advice??

    Answer:
Sure you could find some time to work as a DA. Evening or Saturday. DH programs are challenging, but with good time management, you could do it and still do well in DH school.

Question : What kind of highschool marks do you need to get into a dental hygiene program?

    Answer:
It's a post grad degree, and it's incredibly competitive here in CA.

Question : Which is a better field to get into respiratory therapy or dental hygiene?
I am thinking about entering the medical field, but i only want to do 2 yrs. i was thinking about dental hygiene and respiratory therapy. Which one is better? and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

    Answer:
Hi Ceci - you can get into dental hygiene faster than you can get into respiratory therapy (6-8 mos.), but you can make more as as a respiratory therapist AND literally help improve someone's quality of life. Dental hygienists are very necessary, and thank God we have them; I just hear people grunting and moaning any time I'm in the dental office. Respiratory therapists are helping people help themselves and get back on the road to recovery. (it takes about 2 years for a RT, unless you take an accelerated course. Here are a couple of links that can help you get an idea of what you would be headed into: www.pmi.edu/careers/respiratory_therapy.asp www.medical-career.org www.dvc.edu/respiratorytherapy umary.edu/UM/.../Undergraduate/MathScience/respiratorytherapy Best of luck, Ceci! (last year nursing student)

Question : Be a dental assistant then work on dental hygiene?
I want to spend a year taking my general ed credits then the next year take the one year dental-assisting program. After I finish, i want to work as a dental assistant while i finish my general ed to transfer and study dental hygiene to be a dentist. Is this a reasonable plan or are there any better ideas?

    Answer:
That's a great idea! You will gain lots of experience working at a dental office by the time you finish school and become a dentist. You won't have any problems finding a job after graduation. GOOD LUCK!
