Questions & Answers
Question : How does a new dental care policy typically work? How much does it cost? What does it cover?
Say I get a new dental care package. What does it typically cover? Could I get a policy and immediately use it for fillings. What is the cheapest dental coverage out there that covers fillings and cleanings? Is it economical and feasible to pick up a policy, carry it while you need it and then drop it? Please tell me about your dental coverage experiences. Right now I went to a dental school, but I wanted to research my other option to make sure I'm making the right choice

Answer:
It depends on what strata you on, the lower ones dont pay for anything and the higher ones pay for more

Question : How can you get dental care without insurance and with limited funds?
Need immediate oral surgery, however all oral surgeons seem to want to be paid up front, and I do not have the resources.

Answer:
Check in your area to see if there is a dental school in a university in your area. Temple University offers discounted dental care and the rate is based on what the student dentist charges. Check out your area it may be worth it.

Question : Are there any grants available to indigent people for dental care?
I live in Alabama and my husband has just been diagnosed with heart failure. He has weak and missing teeth and that makes it difficult for him to eat the vegetables and fruits that he should include in his diet. Due to his medical condition he is unable to take ibuprofen for the pain that his teeth cause. If anyone could tell us how he can get the dental care that he is in dire need of we would greatly appreciate it.Or if you can suggest a method of pain relief that would not be harmful to a man with congestive heart failure , that would be helpful. Thank You. He has signed up for medicaid but it could be up to six months before he gets a decision on whether or not he gets it.

Answer:
Most dental schools will do some indigent care in turn for letting their students practice on these patients. However, your husband's CHF is a factor for any type of anesthesia. He should be able to take acetaminophen (tylenol) for pain relief, as that doesn't thin the blood like high levels of ibuprofen does. I would suggest that you speak with his cardiologist about appropriate pain control. And since he is indigent, he would probably qualify for the state's medicaid/medicare plan which would have somekind of coverage for treatment of his CHF. If he has periodental disease from poor oral healthcare, then that would likely be covered too.

Question : How do I get free dental care in Florida?
I have a tooth with a missing filling. The nerve is exposed and it is sending sharp throbbing pain to my bottom right row of teeth anytime I breathe or move my mouth the wrong way. I have been using temporary filler and Ambesol but even that seems to not be working well anymore. I just need it to be dealt with by a professional at this point but we are sooo broke and don't even have health insurance. HELP!! Pls

Answer:
Try going to a Dental College in your area. They usually accept patients "to practice" supervised by their instructors.

Question : How come hospitals don't have dental departments for after hours emergency dental care ?
A friend of mine broke his tooth on Friday evening. He went to a local hospital emergency room and was given pain meds and told to see his dentist first thing Monday morning. Why can't hospitals provide emergency dental care !

Answer:
Because our greedy health care system is horrible ! While a broken tooth isn't exactly an emergency it is crucial to get immediate dental care to have a chance to save a tooth. If you have to wait two or three days to see your dentist, chances are you'll lose a tooth that probably could have been saved. It's a sad situation that our health care system is so expensive, so horrible and above not accessible to everyone. When doctors offices are closed the only other place to get medical attention is via hospital emergency rooms and while some medical issues may not be emergency in nature, where else can you get treatment after hours.

Question : What is the best toothbrush or dental care system to use with braces?
My 9 y/o daughter got braces and I want to make sure that her teeth are getting cleaned properly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer:
Sonicare is especially recommended for someone with braces. Sonicare Elite is my top choice. There are many different model designations, but the "motors" are all pretty much the same. The kits are different because they pack different accessories. Some have two brush heads and some have four. Some have a travel bag and some have a wall-mount charger instead of a counter top charger. Just read the label carefully and buy what you need. Bear in mind that you will have to replace the brush heads about every six months, so see if it is cheaper to buy a few extra brush heads in one of the kits. Otherwise, buy a Sonicare, read and follow the directions. The directions are very clear and easy to understand. If you want to try a Sonicare without taking out a loan, I've got good news for you. I just bought one for THIRTY DOLLARS. It uses two "AA" batteries, so you are not paying for a charger, etc. I have no idea how long the batteries last (yet), but $70 would buy a boat load of batteries. It seems to be equally effective as the rechargeable version with the new batteries.

Question : Why doesn't Canada use surplus to start a national dental care plan?
Canada had a huge surplus in money this year, why doesn't it start a new dental care plan so that everyone can have dental coverage without having to pay ass loads of money themselves or to insurance companies? It's stupid because so many sicknesses and diseases are linked to dental hygiene and maintenance, why wouldn't they implement dental care as a preventative sickness measure to help us Canadians maintain good health? This outrages me so much.

Answer:
I guess it depends on what their other priorities are...

Question : Does anyone know how a navy dependant would enroll in a dental care program?
I really need to enroll in a dental care program, I know that most military dependants can go through something called Concordia, but I just looked at their website and it didn't seem to help. Does anyone have personal experience with this, or know how much it costs? If it helps, I am a navy wife. Thanks!

Answer:
It's through United Concordia. Call them at 1-800-332-0366 and let them know that you want to enroll. It's about $28.00 a month. they will send you a benefits booklet. It's decent insurance.

Question : Is dental care considered to be a luxury good?
is the quantity of dental care demanded very responsive to a change in price?

Answer:
Funny, but here in Canada I guess it is. Dental is not part of the state run health system. Neither is optometry, come to think of it, so I guess they are both "luxuries" from a political stand point.

Question : How much is dental care in the US generally?
I'm needing to get some dental work done and live in Aus, but I'm travelling back to my hometown in Michigan in a couple of months. I'm just trying to work out if it would be cheaper to do it there. Has anyone had a root canal therapy and crown done recently, or could anyone direct me to a place where I could find a general idea of prices? I know I'd have to speak to the dentist once I get there to know for sure, but it would help to have a general idea. (If it's generally about the same cost, then I'll just enjoy my holiday and get it done once I get home!) Depending on what is found in the tooth, I could be looking at a root canal and crown or an extraction and implant. Thanks!

Answer:
I'm a dentist in Texas. Root canals generally run from $700 to 1000, crowns $800-1200. Implants are about $2500-3500(not including the crown that will need to be placed on the implant)
