Questions & Answers

Question : How often should you get a new toothbrush?
My friends mom told me that I am crazy for using a toothbrush for two weeks then throwing it away. Is it bad to do this? I just find toothbrushes gross after using it for more than a week to be honest. But, I stretch it to two just because. So, is it alright to get a new one as often as I do?
Answer:
Every 3-6 months, after an illness (flu, cold, ect...) or if the bristles are splayed/worn down.
Here is the thing about toothbrushes, if you are using the kind with nylon bristles (which most ppl. do) you don't have to worry too much about bacteria. Nylon bristles do not absorb water, so it is not an ideal place for bacteria to live. If you use a natural toothbrush, then you should probably worry, because most natural toothbrushes are made from Boar's hair, which do infact absorb water and are a breeding ground for bacteria.
One of my dental hygiene instructors recommends having two toothbrushes, one for the morning and one for the evening. She said you should allow your toothbrush to completely dry before you use it again.
And yes, it is completely fine getting a new toothbrush as often as you do! Some people are just germaphobes! Make sure you are buying a nylon soft bristled toothbrush, though.

Question : How do you clean the gunk from an electric toothbrush?
I hope you guys can help me with this since Philips (Sonicare maker) couldn't even properly answer this question. Almost every week, disgusting dark green colored film collects inside the electric toothbrush head. First of all, is this normal? is anyone else having this issue? I have to take a manual toothbrush to scrub out the film. Is this a common occurrence with electric toothbrushes, am I supposed to ignore this gross film and just change the head every 3-4 months? It's getting to be a hassle to have to clean out this film every week!
Answer:
THIS FILM IS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE WITH THIS BRUSH. ONCE PER WEEK USE A PAPER TOWEL DAMPENED IN RUBBING ALCOHOL TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THE CAP.
THIS MAINTENANCE MUST ALSO BE DONE FOR THE RUBBER CONNECTOR OF THE BRUSH HEAD.
REMEMBER TO REPLACE THE BRUSH HEAD EVERY THREE MONTHS.
I USE THE SONICARE ELITE MODEL.

Question : How do you brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush without applying pressure?
I love my electric toothbrush but I'm having a hard time holding it to my teeth without applying at least some pressure. I have a small mouth so I don't know if that's adding to my problem. I would love some suggestions or advice. My gums are very sore.
Answer:
Hold the toothbrush in your fingertips, put it into your mouth in the cheek area then close your mouth a bit and brush. Don't tighten your cheek muscles or purse your lips, keep everything relaxed. With the electric toothbrush you use it to guide the bristles around your teeth and gums rather than using it like a manual toothbrush as there is no need to activate it to be effective.

This link has detailed information on Power Brushing including a video that is very useful. If your gums are very sensitive initially try using some Orajel (babys teething gel) on them prior to brushing. This should numb them up a bit. Also if you have an Oral B power brush there is also an "Extra Soft" brushhead available from the drug store.

Question : What happens if you use a denture brush as a normal toothbrush?
oh no, I think I made a mistake. I used a denture brush (it was called plaq killer or something) as a regular brush. The bristles were allot more stiff then a regular toothbrush and I think I might of scraped off all the tooth enamel without realizing it. It worked good for brushing my tongue but I might of made a big mistake using it on my teeth. What do you think? Any dentists?
Answer:
You got really clean teeth.
Seriously, don't worry about it. The danger is to your gums as most denture brushes are too rough on the gum tissue.

Question : How do you prevent an electric toothbrush from discharging in a crowded toilet bag/case when traveling?
Use an Oral B Braun Electric toothbrush which alwsys has the little silver button getting depressed in my toilet case/bag/travel case and always reaches the destination dead!
There is a little reset style button at the back of the brush? Can that be the trick?
Answer:
Wrap it in something soft (Bubble wrap, clothing--a shirt, perhaps) so that there's less pressure on it and that the button is less likely to be pressed.
If that doesn't work, you may want to look into getting a small pencil box that you could fit your toothbrush in. Just put it in, close it, and you're on your way.

Question : How Do I Stop My Toothpaste From Going Down My Toothbrush?
How do I get my toothpaste to not go down the toothbrush. It's not when I brush my teeth. When I use it it doesn't go down the toothbrush, but when I'm done I rinse it really good and make sure there isn't any toothpaste on it. But the next time I use it, there is dried up toothpaste on parts of it. So I need help.
Answer:
Hang it bristle-down when not in use.

Question : What type of toothbrush do you think works best?
My daughter is participating in a Innovation and Invention Fair and wants to innovate a toothbrush. She and her partner want to know toothbrush others prefer and why. They are looking to create a toothbrush that is better at removing plaque-causing bacteria. Thanks for your answers!
Answer:
I love the Crest Spin Brush Pro! It is wonderful at removing plaque. It is also very cheap and easy to replace! I am 49 years old and have used this toothbrush since it came out! My teeth are still good and I always get good dental checkups.I have never lost a tooth for any reason. The dentist says it is a good toothbrush! I have tried electric toothbrushes, but this one is battery operated and it so easy to replace the head.It also does a stellar job of getting my teeth very clean. I love it because once it wears out, I just get a new one!

A person who can't speak wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper, and the purchase is done.
Now if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?
Answer:
He can just ask for them, he's blind, but he can speak...
